Blacksmithing Basics and Beyond at Old West Forge

In this intensive 4 day workshop we will review heat treating, punching, drifting, tapering drawing out, riveting, leaf making and more.

The focus of this class is on traditional joinery used in garden gate components. The components of this project include mortise and tenon joints, heel bars, hot collars, scrolls, and adornments. Tong making will also be emphasized.

Both the beginner and the experienced smith can benefit from the classes
offered at Meridian Forge. Classes are taught mainly by Darryl Nelson, but
Meridian Forge also offers classes taught by visiting artist/blacksmiths. Last year's visiting instructors were, Gary Eagle and Mark Aspery.

Blacksmith classes at Clackamas Community College

Don't be late...sign up now for Blacksmith classes at Clackamas Community College. Weekend classes are scheduled in the welding department for anyone interested. The 4-hour classes are listed as WLD 103, Traditional ironwork and are offered on Saturday evening, Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon. No experience necessary. This is an excellent way to get forge time. Practice make perfect.

Scholarship Opportunity for Beginning Female smiths

The deadline for this has passed but it would be worth pursuing next year.

Vance Baker, a retired line foreman for the utility board in Athens, TN, began blacksmithing in the 1970's.
Over the years, Vance taught blacksmithing at the John C. Campbell Folk School, as well as at the Appalachian Center for Crafts. Some of his skilled reproduction work can be seen at Fort Loudoun in Vonore, TN.

Al Bart Grant

The Al Bart Grant is designed to enable up-and-coming smiths to attend
a variety of educational forums such as workshops, classes, traveling research missions, etc.

In this intensive 4 day workshop we will study heat treating, punching, drifting, tapering, drawing out, riveting, scrolls, and more. Students will forge a variety of forms using traditional techniques.

classes offered - Basic Blacksmithing, Blade Forging, Making Damascus, and Guards and handles for knives.

Classes are arranged as needed. Classes are held in my shop in Vancouver WA.
Limit 3 students at one time. $150 for 1 student, 250 for 2 and 300 for 3 students per day.
Usually 1 day to forge and grind a knife.
