I am new to all this, so could anyone give me an idea what to expect at this conference. I have been forging knives and hand finishing them for just over one year. What should I bring? I want to participate in EVERYTHING and learn all that I can.

Bring your Pencil and notebook, Camera, Chair, Money for the auction (and an Auction item is a good idea, SUPPORT THE CAUSE!and show your work!).

Some tools and any special steel you need for your own project.

Hammer and some tongs helpful, poss Splitting chisel and Punches assorted chisels BUT that is based on what you wish to make, or class you may get into.

There are open forges during the late evenings Fri and Sat. (you might need your own beverages!) This is usually entertaining and a good opportunity for new smiths.

There are Some hands on Classes you may enter a drawing to get involved in.

You will get most out of taking notes, asking questions, and paying attention to the smithing that is going on around you.

Plus, the Tailgating and other great deals you will find, and a bunch of noisy, boisterus, good natured smiths and friends. Some good food too for a couple of meals!

      GOOD TIMES!

      NWBA FALL CONFERENCE UPDATE

Jeffrey Funk will not be able to demonstrate at our fall 2010
NWBA conference. Jeffrey damaged his shoulder and will need
surgery to repair the damage. He was very disappointed and sends
his apologies to the association. He hopes that we will invite him
again when he has recovered from his injury. He is still on our “A List”
and we hope to have him at a conference soon.

I am very happy to announce that Tri Ficker has agreed to
replace Jeffrey as one of our principal demonstrators. Tri is an
excellent smith from Port Townsend, Washington and as we get
closer to the conference, we will provide more information on Tri and
      his demonstration.

Larry and his race crew will be bringing the Ironwood Derby
track to Stevenson. This was lots of fun at Larry’s Hammer-In and we
expect to see a whole lot more cars for the next race. Prizes for the
      winners! Rules – 4” wide, 5lbs. max.

Remember – Camping is free, except for those who wish to
have power and water which is $20.00 for the weekend. I have it on
good authority that the weather will be really nice, but you might want
to bring your rain gear, just in case!

We would love to see a great gallery this time. Please bring one
of your favorite items for all of us to see. It’s always fun to see it in the
      next Hot Iron News.

And, don’t forget the auction. Funds raised at our auctions help
us provide our membership with quality programs and services,
educational grants, and, of course, great conferences.

      See you all in Stevenson
      And
Don’t forget your tomahawks and race cars!

Hello everyone. I looks like I can be to the conference on Friday the 8th.
Not sure if I can stay for the weekend.

As I'm not a NWBA member, how much will registration be for the event?

      Thanks Doug
    1. Grant's Avatar
If you have never been a member, it will only be $45.00 to become a member and your first conference is free!
    1. dlinscott's Avatar
Thanks Grant, hope to see and meet everyone there.

Are you going to bring your new hammer for all of us to see?

My hammer left Iron Kiss Monday and should arrive Friday. Yes, I have made arrangements to have it at the conference.

Very nice, now I have to show up at the conference.

I like that Grant... "made arrangements" What are you going to do about a compressor? Is there power to run a compressor?
    1. Grant's Avatar
So you got a compressor too? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I hornswaggled Larry into bringing the hammer down. That's actually quite an accomplishment as Larry is quite hornswaggle averse.
    1. Larry L's Avatar
I have a 5HP 220 V compressor with a 30 gal tank.... I guess we can see how the hammer runs on it but I think it will be a bit small? I could come up with more tank easy enough

I have just registered my son for membership, and need to get him registered for the conference. Is there pre-registration, or will he and his dad just register when they arrive at the site? Any suggestions on what an 18 year old newbie should bring? Or not bring!
    1. Grant's Avatar
No Pre-registration this time. Just show up. Safety glasses can be purchased on the site. Clothes are recommended. Also see some of the postings above for mare information. Donk put up a pretty good list.

      Mr. Safety says:
Cotton or wool clothes and leather foot wear. Not nylon please, it'll stick to your skin when it melts. It shouldn't happen, I'm just say'in...
    1. Larry L's Avatar
So Grant... I think you should revise your statement.... At this event clothes should be mandatory, not just recommended... The last thing I want to see is a bunch of you guys forging in the buff.... I can tell you it would greatly reduce the fun factor for me personally to be subject to such things

If you are going to be at the conference please consider submitting your photos of the events to the Hot Iron News. We also need some volunteers to shoot photos of the auction and gallery items for publishing purposes. It would be helpful to know in advance if we are going to be getting anything from you guys. If you think that you can help out please let us know at nwbainfo@gmail.com.
